We haven’t had many chances to get out field recording lately with the summer season in full swing and the crowds that come with it. Instead of battling the extra noise, we decided to make the most of the sunshine and had a lovely day exploring St Ives.
Thought I would share a few photos with you.
We never drive into St Ives during the summer. Instead, we caught the train from Truro, changed at St Erth, and then took the pretty branch line that goes alongside the Hayle Estuary. It is one of the most scenic train journeys in the country especially on a sunny day.
Once we arrived we wandered around the town exploring the lovely independent shops. Eventually we got hungry so we grabbed some fish and chips from the takeaway below the cafe at Porthgwidden Beach and ate them whilst watching over the sea. Despite the tempting smell, somehow we managed to enjoy every last chip without being harassed by the legendary St Ives seagulls!
Our final stop was the lovely St Ives Bookseller, where I had promised my daughter I would buy her a book. Then as we walked back towards the station in the evening sunshine, we saw the St Ives lifeboat being towed out of the harbour for a training exercise. Watching the crew head out to sea was a reminder of how much preparation the lifeboat crew do so they are ready when needed in an emergency.
This was one of those days with no itinerary. Just sunshine, a train journey, a wander around St Ives, fish and chips by the sea, and a good book to take home.
